How To: Get the Most From Your Photo Shoot

how to get the most from your photo shoot

You've found a photographer, secured a date and you're all ready to go, right?  I don't think so!  Sure, you can definitely leave all of the planning to your photographer and some may prefer it that way, but others, like myself, want those closest to you to recognize your personality in your photos.

The question is, how do you make sure that you get exactly what you want from your photographer and make sure that your dream photo shoot is brought to life in such a short amount of time?  Lucky for you, I'm here to share some of my tried and true tips from both in front of and behind the camera.

1.  Create a Pinterest Board

Oh, how I love the world of Pinterest.  Creating a Pinterest board full of photographs you love is the easiest way to make sure you get exactly what you want out of your photo shoot.  Not only does it serve as inspiration for your photographer, it gives you the chance to practice your poses!  ** Please note:  It is never a good idea to come into a photo shoot with certain images in your head that you are trying to replicate.  Please see tip #5.  **

2.  Communicate With Everyone Involved

Do you have a special spot in mind that would add a personal element to your photo shoot?  Are there a lot of people involved that you need to coordinate with?  Do you hope to meet with your photographer before the shoot?  The best advice that I can give you is to communicate.  Not only will it make life a whole lot easier for you, but for your photographer as well.  It will lead to a smooth photo shoot which means it gives your photographer more time to capture that perfect shot!

3.  Get Plenty of Rest

Sleep.  It's probably one of my favorite activities and oh, how it is underrated.  Though Photoshop can work miracles, you want to look awake and well rested in your photos.  Not to mention you want to be in a good state of mind throughout your shoot!  The better the mood, the better the photo.  It's a proven fact, people.

4.  Plan Your Outfits Weeks Before Your Shoot

Your outfits are one of the most important parts of the planning process as a whole.  Unsure of what to wear?  Email your photographer!  I can guarantee that they will welcome the question and will help you coordinate the perfect outfits for your shoot based on location.  If all else fails, you can never go wrong with your own personal style.  I do recommend that my clients either go the route of solid colors that photograph extremely well, or choose something neutral and add small pops of color with accessories.

5.  Trust Your Photographer

You hired them, right?  You love their style, your personalities clicked, something about this person (or team) made you feel right at home and made you trust them right off the bat.  Be confident in their ability to pull off your dream shoot and capture YOU in the photos that they take.

So, what do you think?  Do you have any tried and true tips on how to make sure you get the most out of a photo shoot?  Let's keep the conversation going in the comments section below!
